About T9 Mastered: Essentials

Those who investigate and adjudicate Title IX complaints must regularly manage changes in campus policies and procedures. Title IX professionals are also facing increasing concern from students, legal counsel, and other stakeholders about the quality of these investigations and the time it takes to complete them.

Whether you are an experienced investigator or are handling your first complaint, T9 Mastered’s Essentials training program will give you a better understanding of Title IX —  the legal framework that underpins it, the procedures that flow from it, and the impact it has on campuses.

Our program, now offered on-line, is built around a realistic case study of a student complaint of sexual assault. Participants are able to watch experienced investigators conduct interviews with the Complainant, Respondent and a key witness. Participants discuss what happened in these interviews and examine what investigators did well and what approaches fell short.

Building on the case study, the program is interspersed with presentations on:

  • Understanding the legal framework that supports Title IX complaints and campus policies
  • Developing investigative plans
  • Recognizing biases and how they can impact the fact-gathering
  • Asking difficult questions about consent
  • Analyzing incapacitation and credibility

Our Essentials program also includes a comprehensive presentation by a mental-health professional on the effects of trauma and approaches to trauma-informed forensic interviewing. This session is followed by a hands-on workshop on conducting Title IX interviews led by experienced faculty who themselves conduct Title IX investigations and serve as hearing officers.

This program is compliant with aspects of California requirements for training under SB 493.

The two-day Essentials program is focused on fact-gathering. If you are interested in honing your writing skills, T9 offers a separate one-day program on writing reports and findings.
